The Importance of Changing Your Water Cooler Filters

While water filter suppliers may have aggressive marketing campaigns, the underlying message of changing your filters remains a fact. While systems are available in different sizes and shapes, your water cooler filters will still need to be regularly changed.

Why Water Cooler Filters Need Changing:

Most filter systems use charcoal, carbon or a blend of materials to reduce water impurities. The contaminant levels are reduced in one of two ways. Some contaminants are eliminated through mechanical filtration. This means that the particles are trapped within the pores of the filter. Once the pores become clogged, water cannot effectively move through the filter. The other method involves contaminants being trapped on the surface of the water cooler filter. When the surface is filled, the filter loses its ability to absorb further contaminants.

While it is easy to see if the water flow from your filter has been reduced, it can be trickier to see if the surface area of the filter has been filled.

Many coolers have particular service cycles which will provide an estimate of how long a typical filter will last. You may also find that your filter has a specific number of litres which can be filtered before it needs to be replaced. Choosing the Right Filter:

While it’s tempting to choose the cheapest option, this is not always a good idea. Although you can save a few dollars on your household expenses by buying generic products, you may regret scrimping on your replacement filter. Filters are designed to perfectly fit your cooler. Even if a filter appears to be a good fit, unless it is manufactured specifically to fit your cooler, the chances are that it will not be suitable. A poorly fitted filter will allow water to flow around the edges unobstructed. This will mean that contaminants will be flowing into your drinking water, negating the purpose of having a filter in the first place. 

Additionally, cheap, generic filters are cheap for a reason. The primary reason why they can be sold for a lower price is that they are made using cheaper materials. Since the quality is not as high as your manufacturer filters, they may introduce impurities into your drinking water. Even if the filter can perform an adequate job, it is not likely to have the same lifespan, which means that you may end up paying more in the long term.
